Update [04 Sep 2008|05:59pm]
In a mixed blessing of the week, school has been canceled TUE, WED, and today due to a water boiler releasing 750,000 gallons of water into the building. So, I've been mildly productive:

1) August 22nd, I moved into my father's house from Lynn.
2) We no longer have grading software, so I data entered everything into Excel in my laptop at the weekend job, so my gradebook / contact log is ready to go.
3) Almost done unpacking. Still need to build shelves for my bookcase for a CD rack, but pretty much finished everything else. Today I sorted folders of college work.
4) Tried to burn DVDs of files off this computer, but it crashes every time, so not sure what to do. Have successfully set up the wireless router so I have access from my room. (In an unrelated story, my flat panel monitor flicks on and off continuously, but my father had an extra monitor, so at least I have something).
5) Contacted bankruptcy attorney, annoyed that she was completely wrong about something the last time I talked to her. But moving forward.
6) Contacted divorce attorney. Haven't heard back, but at least wheels are in motion.

Writer's Block: A Posthumous Oscar for Joker? [13 Aug 2008|12:38am]

Do you think Heath Ledger deserves the Oscar for his role in the Dark Knight?

I only am answering this as I just saw the movie:

I don't think so, but it should be pointed out that his Joker voice also happens to be Al Franken's voice. I don't know what should be made of that, but it's disturbing.

Observe:

Joker

Al Franken:

Now go watch the movie and imagine it's Al Franken the whole time, it will really alter the experience for you.

No One Cares, but this has plagued me for years [27 Feb 2007|11:43pm]
[ music | Björk - "Play Dead" ]

Ok, so in probability there is something called the "Monty Hall Problem" dealing with the probability of winning a car if given three doors to choose from. If you google it, you get about 1,000 websites. Many of them purport to offer an explination. All of those explinations suck.

Here it is people, nice and simple:

three doors

theoretical probability of picking winner is 1/3

theoretical probability of picking loser is 2/3

When Monty Hall opens a losing door and invites you to switch, you should switch, because you had a 2/3 chance of picking a loser initially. Now that two doors remain, the door you originally chose still has a 1/3 chance of being the winner, but the other door has a 2/3 chance of being the winner as you were more likely to pick loser in the first place.

Why couldn't my math professor have explained it like that? I swear people get all mathy in their explinations and forget the simplest way.

Interview Meme [20 Feb 2007|11:43pm]
[ music | Jena Malone and her bloodstains - "New Year Come" ]

interview meme from rabi "don't call me audrey" whitaker ( [info]kazulrw)
the questions from same

1. what is morgan up to these days? does she have any outfits as funny as that flag one from last summer?

She has a few odd outfits, but most of them were for specal occasions only. It's in my phone only at this point, but for the month prior to Halloween she was a lobster as that was provided at the baby shower and she was going to outgrow by Halloween. She also had an easter bunny outfit. A large amount of the baby clothes market is for stuff that is cute but completely non-practical. Or to make your baby dress like a Bratz doll, which is also bad. So, basically standard sweaters and baby cargo pants that have pockets for some unexplainable reason (baby keys?)

As for what she is up to, she will climb to great heights...if you leave the room. So, I find her standing on the arm of the couch trying to get at the cable box, or attempting pull-ups on the edge of the playpen. She does enjoy playing soccer and will hit it back to you for as long as her attention allows (except that she gets excited and gets closer each time). Still refusing to walk at this time even though she clearly can. She only attempts when she sees other todlers walking, which isn't very often. And she has a fairly rich vocabulary, a little unevenly applied.

2. which part of your job do you like better: the physics aspect or the education aspect? why?

Tough one. Well, you may or may not know I am actually certified in Earth Science, not physics. Still pursuing the physics test which is a super-bitch as it asks questions that I never learned in physcis classes and never taught in a full-year course (such as optics). When I applied for my current position it was advertised as "science" and my school doesn't teach earth science at all. I never foresaw myself as a physics teacher ever. I didn't like it in high school, kind of fell into it in college, and somehow ended up teaching it. I still don't like the soul-crushing nature of college physics (the math anyway, I've always liked the concepts), especially due to my last class Introduction to Quantum Mechanics which featured 4 problem homeworks that would take 6 hours and receive a check. Then some awful integral apparently equals 2PI and the teacher would do the same problems in about 30 seconds. Anyways, I read conceptual physics books as a hobby, but I read history books as a hobby as well, I guess I'm just into learning. I definitely appreciate physics more as far as helping work ethic in other areas as well as developing the vague sounding "critical thinking skills" that are important everywhere.

At the same time really do appreciate the education aspect. It's frustrating when people struggle on basic concepts sometimes, but I wouldn't be doing what I was doing if I didn't enjoy it or think it was important. Differently from you, I hate grading even if my students do well as even 120 good grades is painful. I don't consider solely multiple choice questions as an authentic assessment of a students ability, and as such tests are time consuming to grade.

So, in conclusion, equally?

3. why is the banana in your icon so worried?

The banana is within the first two minutes.

4. has massachusetts disowned mitt romney now, or are they paying him as little attention as new york? also, what is up with mitt romney anyway? is he delusional?

We disowned him a long time ago. All the stumping for President Bush in the last election as well as national tours to get his name out there alienated what little support he had left. Belittling us on the national stage doesn't help. And throw in his rejection of his own opinions on gay rights expressed while debating ted kennedy in the '94 senate race as "I changed my mind" definitely seals the deal. Pretty sure he's delusional. And I think it's pretty clear he has a snowball's chance in hell of being elected as president, but I would give him the edge on at least appearing on the Republican party ticket as Vice President. I can say that I doubt he will even win the primary here. I'm thinking a lot of people will vote McCain if given the choice between the two.

5. I have some memory of a music review you wrote once in which you said it (freezepop?) made you think about wearing plastic pants. I'm assuming you never got those pants, but is there anything you wear now that would shock your former self?
Definitely not. The only thing that would surprise me is the number of paint-stained shirts I have. I had this habit of forgetting what shirt I was wearing while painting till eventually 7 or 8 shirts got paint on them. It didn't help that I painted 9 rooms, the outside of the house/garage (about 30 separate days), and one ceiling. and I painted someone else's living room as well. I also ruined a pair of sweatpants (well, ruined appearance, I still wear them) by wiping excess caulk on them repeatedly. Lots of character now. But no plastic. They don't make that in my size anyways.

also stolen:
feel free to ask me more questions if you are so inclined.

or, if you want to answer some, here are the rules of the meme, which you all probably know by now:

1. leave me a comment saying, "interview me." [for practical purposes, i will take the first 5]
2. I will respond by asking you five questions.
3. you will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. you will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. when others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions

Snow Advice [14 Feb 2007|04:35pm]
Ok, so we have snow, and then lots of rain, which is saturating the snow, but not melting it. The streets surrounring the house are rapidly deepening (some under greater than a foot of water at this point) and the questions is:

Do I shovel?

Conventional wisdom holds that you shovel. However, it is going to go below freezeing tonight and with 2-3 inches of water appearing in any hole opened by shoveling, I do not know whether it's better to shovel and have 2 inches of ice, or not shovel and have 3-4 inches of bumpy ice which grips your shoes better. I did shovel out the end of the driveway and th stairs as the water lows off such things s well as to take care of the plow depth, but not sure about the 120 feet of sidewalk that remains. Advice?

I'll say this once, for any interested parties out there, yuccacentric the blog is back.  The design is of low priority, but it's nice to actually do content again.  The one tease I can give is that it includes the account of my herniated disk turned possible stroke turned herniated disk episode.  Exciting.
